About Cicely Mary Barker's "Flower Fairies"TM
Cicely Mary Barker's artistic talent was first recognized when she was 16 years of age with the publication of a set of postcards. Born in 1895 in Croydon, South London, she received most of her formal education at home due to ill health. It was here that she taught herself to draw and paint. The publication of a series of Flower Fairies books beginning in 1923 brought her International acclaim as an artist.
Cicely Mary Barker carefully studied plants, flowers, insects and butterflies, and her artistic studying of children are evident in her work. Her Flower Fairies series of books which she both wrote and illustrated were very successful and she created seven more. Cecily Mary Barker's sister, Dorothy, was a kindergarten teacher, and her students doubled as subjects for Barker's illustrations. Children and adults alike have since enjoyed her charming, yet botanically accurate illustrations and accompanying poems.
Cicely Mary Barker died peacefully on February 16, 1973, at the age of 77.
Each Flower Fairy has been officially Licensed by the Estate of Cicely Mary Barker. Flower Fairies are released in individual Series. Each Flower Fairies Series consist of (6) Flower Fairies. Only 2 new Series are released each year. Only 114 Flower Fairies (19 Series) have been released to date. As of January 2005, 26 Fairies in Series I thru VI have Officially been Retired.
Each Flower Fairy is cast from polystone and Handpainted with great detail. These Flower Fairy miniatures range in height up to 4". One style, using a 6" Floral Pick (included) can be used in potted plants, shade gardens (direct sun may cause fading), floral arrangements or wreaths. Additionally, a Gold Cord is attached for use as an ornament. Many of our Customers hang them on Christmas Trees or create mobiles. |
